LIBRARY DIRECTOR

The Board of Trustees of the Mountainside Public Library is seeking a professional librarian to serve as Library Director, effective August 17, 2020.

DUTIES

Administration of the Mountainside Public Library, as delegated by the Board of Trustees, including the management of all public and technical services, programming, physical plant, library budget, library personnel and all library operations and systems.  

Prepare for and attend Library Board meetings.  Plan and conduct monthly staff meetings. 

Prepare narrative and statistical reports. 

Keep current with professional developments, trends and laws.  Keep Board, staff and elected officials informed. 

Promote the library through effective communication and marketing initiatives including, but not limited to, newsletters, public appearances, press releases and web pages. 

Seek additional sources of funding through various sources, including Friends groups, grants, community organizations and other sources.  Must be comfortable fundraising. 

Establish and maintain effective work relationships with the Board of Trustees, elected officials, Friends group, community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders, including the general public.

Cover the Reference Desk on Thursday evenings, one Saturday a month and other times as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

An ALA accredited MLS, MLIS or equivalent degree.

Three to five years’ experience as a professional librarian preferred.

New Jersey State Certification

Excellent communication skills, flexibility, good sense of humor.  Ability to work well with others, including staff, patrons and government officials.  Ability to connect with a supportive community. 

Facility with technology and automated library systems. (MPL currently uses Apollo by Biblionix). 

Candidate must be willing to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation.

 

COMPENSATION 

Salary commensurate with experience.

Library Director is a full-time position with executive responsibility. 

Includes 22 vacation days (pro-rated for first year), 15 days of sick leave (pro-rated to one day per month for first year of employment), and 11 paid holidays.

Mountainside Public Library participates in NJ Public Employees Retirement System and State Health Benefits Plan.
