FAQs

Q:  How do I get a library card?
A:  Mountainside residents may apply in person with a photo ID and proof of residency.  Non-residents who work in town may apply in person with a photo ID and proof of employment.  Non-residents who own property in Mountainside may apply in person with a photo ID and a tax bill.

Q:  How old must you be to get a library card?
A:  There is no age restriction to get a library card but at least one parent or guardian must be registered and is required at registration to show photo ID and proof of residency.

Q:  What if I lose my library card?
A:  Lost cards can be replaced in-person at the circulation desk with a photo ID and proof of residency.

Q:  How long can you keep library materials?
A:  Most library materials are due back in 28 days.  New adult books, children's holiday books, VOX books, audiobooks, music CDs and TV series DVDs are due back in 14 days.  DVDs, magazines, and puppets are due back in 7 days.  Newly released DVDs are due back in 4 days.  Patrons can receive courtesy email or text message reminders 3 days prior to any due date.

Q:  What is my PIN#?
A:  If you do not know your PIN#, please call the library for assistance.

Q:  How do I access my account?
A:  Patrons can access their account from the Mountainside Library homepage.  Select "My Account" and you will be prompted to fill in your library card number and PIN.  Once in your account you can:  view all current loans and their due dates, renew current loans, put items on hold, save searches and books into personalized lists, select your favorite authors in Reserve Express, defer your account while on vacation, and much more.

Q:  What other libraries accept my Mountainside library card:
A:  As a Mountainside library cardholder, you have borrowing privileges at more than 40 area libraries through the MURAL (Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries) reciprocal borrowing system.  Materials may be borrowed and returned at any participating library.  Each library has its own lending policies, so please call ahead to see what is available for borrowing.

Please note:  patrons must be in good standing with their home library in order to borrow from other MURAL libraries.

Q:  How do I place a hold?
A:  To place a hold on a title, log into your account, then use the catalog to search for your item.  Select the item, then select the reserve tab.  The library will contact you when your request is ready for pick-up.  You have two days to claim the item.

Q:  How do I renew my items?
A:  To renew your items, log into your account and select Items Out/Renewals.  Select "Renew" next to the item you with to renew.  If there is no renew option, the item is not renewable.

Q:  What if I lose a library item?
A:  When an item is lost or damaged, the borrower is responsible for the replacement cost of that item and a $5.00 processing fee.  Cash or check only will be accepted.

Q:  Does the library have museum passes?
A:  The Friends of the Mountainside Library are pleased to provide passes to eight outstanding museums in New Jersey and New York, and a discount on admission to the Liberty Science Center.

Q:  Does the library provide Internet access?
A:  Yes, the library provides both public computers and wireless Internet access via WiFi.  Check your device's settings and select Library Network.  No password is needed.

Q:  How can I support the library?
A:  You may donate directly to the library or to the Friends of the Mountainside Library, whose mission is to support the library.  All donated funds directly benefit the library and are tax deductible.  You may also volunteer your time to the Friends of the Mountainside Library.  This devoted group of volunteers raises funds to strengthen and expand library programming, including summer reading, adult and youth programs, and the museum pass program.

Q:  Can I donate books?
A:  Book donations are accepted only when the Friends of the Mountainside Library are holding their book sale.  We do not accept text books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, outdated reference books, magazines, torn or destroyed items, or books with water damage, mold, or mildew.

Q:  Does the library provide Internet access?
A:  Yes, the library provides both public computers and wireless Internet access (WiFi).

Q:  What devices can I use to download eBooks, audiobooks, movies, and music?
A:  You can borrow any electronic media with a desktop computer, tablet, Kindle, or smarphone.

Q:  What is Libby?
A:  Download the Libby app onto your smartphone or tablet (it is free).  Select Mountainside Library and enter your library card number and PIN.  Libby gives you access to ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines.  To access these items from a browser on your computer, type in elibrarynj.com.

Q:  What is Hoopla?
A:  Hoopla is a digital resource for ebooks, audiobooks, movies, tv series, and music.  You can click on the Hoopla link on our homepage under Digital Resources, or just Google "Hoopla."  Hoopla is also available as an app for tablet or smartphone.  You will need to create an account with an email and password.

Q:  What is Kanopy?
A:  Kanopy is a digital streaming service, featuring movies, tv series, documentaries, and animation.  Kanopy can be accessed through your browser or app.  To watch Kanopy on your tv, you can use an external device such as Roku, Apple tv, or Amazon Firestick.  You will need to create an account by selecting the Mountainside Library and entering your library card number.

Q:  Can I get Consumer Reports online?
A:  You can access the current and back issues of Consumer Reports through Flipster.  Flipster is available through your browser or as an app on your smartphone or tablet.  

Q:  What is Tumblebooks?  
A:   Tumblebooks has read-along picture books, chapter books, National Geographic videos, non-fiction books & graphic novels for children.  You can access it through your browser or download the app to a tablet or smartphone.
