About Friends of the Library

Friends

Welcome to the Friends of the Mountainside Library page. For more than 60 years, the Friends have played a significant role in creating and nurturing this important, vibrant community resource.

The Friends is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service. 100% of our fundraising proceeds go directly to the Library. All Mountainside residents receive our annual newsletter in the Fall, along with a donation form, but we happily accept donations year ‘round.  Click here for a donation form. Your donation makes you a Friends member.

The Friends fund >90% of the Library’s programming as well as new initiatives and upgrades that make our library special, including:

  • Expansion of the library’s collections
  • Licensing and other fees for a variety of programs
  • Technology, equipment, and furniture
  • New and ongoing initiatives on the Library’s “wish list”

Pandemic or no pandemic, the Friends commitment to the Library is as strong as ever. In addition to our fundraising campaigns, we work with the Library Director to support virtual programs for children and adults, and identify and support pandemic-era programs such as the virtual Book Club. The Friends supply the books, which will then be sold at our Book Sales once they resume.

The Friends launched a series of virtual programs in early 2021. Examples include Staying Positive in Trying Times; Keep Less: Toss More; NASA’s Perseverance Mars Mission; How Musicals Get to Broadway; and programs highlighting our state’s history: Legends of Liberty Hall; William Livingston – Governor, General, Signer of the Constitution; and History through Photography (Jersey Shore and State Parks).

Friends-sponsored virtual events are always in the works! See the Library Events page for upcoming presentations here.

We’re also looking at developing virtual and low- or no-contact versions of the Friends traditional fundraisers, and of course our traditional in-person events will return as soon as conditions permit. Traditional in-person fundraisers include Fall and Spring Book Sales, a Holiday Boutique, and a Make Me Chic Boutique – just in time for Mother’s Day. We have fun organizing and running these fundraisers, and once they resume volunteers are welcome!

The Friends of the Mountainside Library webpage will be updated periodically. Please stay tuned and please continue to come to the library, whether it’s curbside, electronically or – soon we hope – in person.
